Yard Waste / Cleanup / Recycling

The City of Allegan has established the following Yard Waste Services policies:

Rules and Regulations Brush Pick-Up:

The City will pick up brush on all City streets two times per month beginning the first and third Mondays of the month.  If a Monday is a holiday, pick up will begin on Tuesday.  If a large windstorm or ice event occurs, additional brush pick will begin on the weekday following the event.

First and Third Weeks begin in April.

Christmas Tree pick up will start after New Years Day

Brush must be at least 2’ long but not longer than 10’.

  • Not exceed 4” diameter.
  • Not include loose leaves, twigs, etc. These materials must be placed in City approved composting bags. Bags must not weigh more than 50 pounds.
  • Not include trash, vines, building materials, plants, dirt, stumps or roots.
  • Be stacked in one direction only.
  • Not be tied with string, twine, wire or similar materials.
  • Be placed on the public right-of-way, between the street and the property line, not on private property and not on the pavement.
  • Items may not be set out prior to 3:00 PM on the Friday immediately prior to the pick up date.
  • Brush and bags combined may not exceed the amount that can be loaded on a one ton dump truck per property per month. Please do not place brush and bags in the same pile.

Bagged Leaf/Grass Pick-Up
The City will pick up bagged leaves and yard wastes on all City streets two times per month beginning on the first and third Monday of every month.  If the first Monday is a holiday, pick up will begin on Tuesday.

Pick-ups will begin on the same dates as brush pick up.

The following rules apply:

Yard waste must be in approved City bags. Bags may be purchased at True Value Hardware, Ace Hardware, Village Market and City Hall.

  • Bags must contain only grass, leaves or other foliage.
  • Bags must not weigh more than 50 pounds each.
  • Bags must be placed on the public right-of-way, between the street and the property line; not on private property and not on the pavement.
  • NO ROOTS, STUMPS, STONES, DIRT, GARBAGE, METAL, BROKEN CONCRETE, LUMBER OR OTHER BUILDING MATERIALS.
  • Items may not be set out prior to 3:00 PM on the Friday immediately prior to the pickup date.
  • Brush and bags combined may not exceed the amount that can be loaded on a one ton dump truck per property per month. Please do not place brush and bags in the same pile.

City residents can drop off leaf bags and brush anytime at the Public Works garage, 691 Airway Drive.

Fall Leaf Pickup:

Beginning the last two weeks of October until the end of November the City will pick up leaves with the leaf vacuums. During this time leaves can be raked to the right of way for vacuum pickup. No bags are required during this time. The leaves need to be raked to the edge of the roadway. Please do not cover up storm water inlets with your leaves.

Failure to follow these policies may result in a civil infraction per the City's ordinances.


Spring and Fall Clean-Ups are held semi-annually.

The City of Allegan provides two residential clean-ups, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. City residents can drop off items at the Department of Public Works Garage at 691 Airway Drive, Allegan, MI. All electronic items (computers, televisions, cell phones, radios and etc.) will be picked up by an electronics recycling company. We will also offer tire, metal and Freon appliance recycling. General trash dumpsters will be on site for disposal. You must prove you are a City resident prior to disposing of any item. The following are not accepted at the clean-up: Household Garbage, Asphalt, Roofing Shingles, Household Hazardous Waste, Leftover Paint, Flammables, Brush or Leaves, Cement, Brick or Stone.


Recycling and Disposal Services provided by Outside Vendors

Mercury Thermometers can be dropped off at the Allegan County Health Department anytime during business hours; no appointment is required. Please double wrap thermometers in plastic zip-lock bags for transport.

Electronics waste - Michigan Goodwill stores now accept all computer equipment, usuable or not, free of charge. Contact individual locations for more information. The South Kent County Landfill, 300 100th Street, in Byron Center, offers free recycling of residential computer, audio and video equipment, and televisions of any size. Landfill hours are 7:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday; 7:30 am - 3:30 pm on Saturday.

Household Hazardous Waste is accepted by Drug and Laboratory Disposal Inc., 331 Broad Street, Plainwell, MI 49080. They charge a small fee for this service. It is recommended that you call ahead for current pricing and to schedule a drop off at (269) 685-9824.

Used motor oil can be recycled at Auto Zone in Allegan - 420 Western Avenue. Please call to check their hours, 269.686.7877. IMPORTANT: Do not mix other wastes with used oil. Such mixtures can create hazards and make recycling more difficult.
