Marilla Griswold Endowment Fund
Almost 80 years ago, one woman’s dream and vision for her community came true. Her dream was to provide a place for the community to come together, experience a variety of entertainment and most of all, enjoy themselves. With this vision in mind, The Griswold Auditorium was built with generous funds bequeathed to the city of Allegan by Lumber Baroness Marilla Griswold.
Since the dream was built, The Griswold Auditorium has been a cultural and historical icon in the heart of Allegan. At this time, The Griswold continues to be a community gathering place for a variety of arts and entertainment events and will continue to strive with your support. The Griswold’s stage was broken in by The Allegan Community Players in December of 1930 with the production, Minick. Since this production, The Players have continued with performances ranging from Uncle Tom’s Cabin to Rip Van Winkle and more recently The Wizard of Oz.
In accordance with Mrs. Griswold’s dream, the auditorium continues to meet a community need as a vibrant performing arts venue. The Griswold Auditorium has also been utilized by non-profit organizations, community clubs and citizens for concert events, theatrical productions, annual dance recitals and pageants and additional social gatherings. The Griswold Auditorium and Banquet Center is and will continue to be the community gathering place for cultural events and entertainment with your support.
Recently an endowment fund has been established at The Griswold Auditorium to support every aspect of business and to help ensure the fiscal stability of the Auditorium today and well into the future. Money generated from the endowment fund will support onstage programming, educational programs, and to preserve the historical integrity of the building while providing funds for restorations and improvements.
The generosity and foresight of our endowment donors ensures not only the curtain will go up and down onstage…But also that when the curtain goes down on each performance, the impact of The Griswold in our community resonates well beyond the final applause.
To help us celebrate the Griswold’s 80th Anniversary, join us in our efforts to protect and enhance this theatrical and historical treasure we have…and are committed to keep.
