Planning  & Zoning

The Allegan Planning Commission oversees development in the city, both by reviewing site plans, developing a master plan to direct and advise future development in the city, and serving as an advisory board to City Council on matters relating to rezonings, special use permits, and ordinance adoptions or amendments. The Allegan Planning Commission conducts its regular meeting on the 3rd Monday of each month in the Council Chambers at Allegan City Hall (231 Trowbridge Street, Allegan, MI 49010). Copies of agendas and meeting minutes can be found here.

Allegan's Zoning Ordinance and Map seeks to promote an orderly pattern of development and to protect incompatible uses from one another, such as industrial uses and residential neighborhoods, to ensure a pleasant environment. The zoning ordinance works in tandem with the master plan to ensure positive growth in the City of Allegan as directed by the relevant City boards and commission. Community members may apply for a zoning variance to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
