| Consumers Energy |
|
Consumers Energy has received a new 30-year operating license for its Calkins Bridge Hydro Project, which forms Lake Allegan on the Kalamazoo River. The new license provides for continued operation of the facility until April 10, 2040. Calkins Bridge generates more than 13 million kilowatt-hours of energy per year, enough to supply the annual power needs of about 1,550 residential customers. Lake Allegan also provides excellent outdoor recreation opportunities for area residents and visitors.
The new Calkins Bridge license provides for continuation of the dam's current run-of-river operation. This maintains Lake Allegan at a constant level, and water is passed through the powerhouse at the same rate as it enters the lake upstream. The new license also calls for Consumers Energy to work with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to develop a lake sturgeon habitat project in the Kalamazoo River below the dam. That work will be funded by Consumers Energy and is expected to occur in 2011 or 2012. Lake sturgeon is listed as a threatened species in Michigan and the DNR is targeting its restoration to healthy population levels throughout the state. Questions about the new Calkins Bridge license issued to Consumers Energy may be sent to: hydro@cmsenergy.com.

| Downtown Deli Art Expo |
The Downtown Bakery & Deli will host the Spring Art Expo for the Month of April. This is the perfect way to welcome Spring. Each artist will choose a charity to support and will split the earnings 50/50 with the charity. Many artists choose to donate the entire amount to their charity. Nearly $300.00 was raised in 2009. The walls and shelves at the Deli will showcase the submitted artwork for the public to admire and vote on with their pocket change to make a change in an artist and a charity.
The show consists of many artistic mediums. For all artists interested in submitting works of art, please pick up an entry form at the Downtown Bakery & Deli at 116 Locust Street, Allegan, MI 49010. Two awards will be presented. Best of Show will be chosen by a panel of judges from the Allegan Area Arts Council. The People's Choice Award comes into play with the voting/donation canisters. This award is given to the top fund raiser for their charity. The awards will be given at an Open House presentation at the Downtown Bakery & Deli on April 30th from 5:00 7:00 PM. It is with great appreciation to the Downtown Development Authority that we are able to offer two $50.00 prize awards this year.
This event is sponsored by The Arts & Entertainment Action Committee, the Downtown Bakery & Deli, the Allegan Area Arts Council with liaison Joy Richmond and the Downtown Development Authority.
