Freshness brought directly to YOU: The Allegan Farmers Market

These days we hear so much about green technologies, agri-tourism, and organic foods.  Many of which are happening right here in Allegan, right in your backyard.

Every Thursday local farmers with locally grown produce, yes locally grown, travel to Downtown Allegan to offer you fresh, crisp produce and baked goods and hardy, healthy, vibrant plants and herbs.  Freshness brought directly to you, how convenient is that?

The benefits of shopping at a farmers market are immense for everyone involved.

Freshness and quality ::  Often harvested just hours before the grower leaves home, this freshness is evident in appearance, flavor and nutrient content.

Variety :: Available are a wide variety of produce, herbs, fresh flowers and organically grown crops.

Availability :: Farmers' market produce is often available sooner than that from home gardens due to practices used by professionals that lead to early maturity.

Price :: With no "middleman" the price is often less than retail outlets, and prices for "seconds" can be negotiated.

Place for the community :: Meet new friends and socialize with old acquaintances while you experience the market.

Variable quantities :: Customers wishing to take advantage of the height of the season by canning or freezing their purchases can arrange for larger amounts at reduced prices.

Social effects

:: Customers enjoy talking with growers about their operations.

Local benefit :: Dollars are kept in the local community and you support smaller, less commercialized farmers and producers.

Nothing beats Michigan strawberries in May or biting into a juicy Honeycrisp apple in September, visit the Allegan Farmers Market every Thursday May through October.

Also be watching for the Downtown Connector for special market events this season.

The Allegan Farmers Market is located at the corner of Water and Cutler Streets in Downtown Allegan.  The market is open every Thursday from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm.
