Making Spirits Brighter This Year!

SnowmenIt is not too late to greet the season in Downtown Allegan!  There are holiday happenings for all!  Many downtown shops continue extended shopping hours until Christmas. Festive Friday Shopping continues this week. Also on the 19th, the Allegan Downtown Development Authority is pleased to sponsor free horse drawn wagon rides and visits with Santa from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.  Visits with Santa will be held inside the Woodland Trading Company; free hot chocolate and live entertainment will be available at the Downtown Bakery and Deli.

Looking for a gift idea?  Head to Downtown Allegan on December 19, for the Holiday Art Hop.  Several artists will be displaying their work in local businesses on the final Festive Friday Shopping Night.  Shoppers are invited to pick up a free program in front of City Hall on the night of the event. The program will include a map of where the art is on display, and shoppers can seek out the perfect gift or just enjoy a night of art entertainment.  For more information about the Holiday Art Hop, please contact Linda at 673-7080.

December 20 is your last chance to lunch with Santa for this year!  The Downtown Bakery and Deli offers some one-on-one time with the big guy.  Tickets for "Lunch with Santa" are $6.00 and will also include a ticket for a free movie at the Regent Theatre.  Please contact the Deli :: 686-9537 :: for reservations.

The Allegan Area Arts Council and the consortium of businesses known as Simply Well, along with other downtown Allegan shops, will present their inaugural Holiday Art Hop Friday evening, December 19, from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M

A printed program made possible by funding from the Downtown Development Authority details each artist and his or her host shopkeeper.  This program will be available in many downtown stores a week prior to the event or on the evening of the 19th in front of City Hall, Locust Street.  An easy-to-follow map guiding "hoppers" to the artists, all within a two block area, will be in the program as well.  There is no charge for the Hop program.  This is a free event open to the public.

Arts Council Vice-Chair and Holiday Art Hop Coordinator Dina Ebeling-Hestera invites the community to view the art of photographers, weavers, woodworkers, potters, home décor painters and fine artists using many different mediums.  Music will be provided by area students at Uncommon Threads Espresso Cafe on Locust Street, and free refreshments will be offered at many other Hop stops.

Most artists will have reasonably priced work for sale and many will be showcasing a work-in-progress.  The Hop is an excellent opportunity to purchase art-related gifts for holiday gift-giving.  Children accompanied by their parents are encouraged to attend, as many families will be downtown to celebrate Festive Friday, an evening of late shopping at downtown stores, holiday music, free wagon rides, and visits with Santa Claus sponsored by the City of Allegan and the Downtown Merchants Association

With almost fifteen stops on the Holiday Art Hop, this promises to be a full evening for the art enthusiast and the casual shopper alike.  For more information, please contact Linda Clark by calling 269-673-7080 (days). Art Hop Arts & Locations
Baker Allegan Studio Grand Opening!
SpinnerBaker Allegan Studios, located in the Historic Milling District of Downtown Allegan, is nearly complete. Baker Allegan Studios, the brainchild of Debbie and Joe Leverence of Dearborn, MI, is the first step in what the City of Allegan hopes to be the revitalization of the Historic Milling District.

Acting as their own general contractor and doing nearly all of the building themselves, the Leverence's have worked tirelessly, making the drive across the state every weekend to put their heart and soul as well as their life's savings into their dream. The newly restored and handicap accessible building provides 6 working artists studios for rent in the lower level. The main floor has a 1000 sq. ft. Art Gallery, and the 2000 sq. ft. Fiber Arts Studio of Sow Spun Silk, the weaving and spinning shop belonging to Debbie Leverence. The top level will eventually become their apartment.

On September 16, when the Kalamazoo River caused so much damage following heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Ike, the River overran the dam and flooded the newly renovated lower level. Without flood insurance and denied aid from FEMA, they set about the task of repairing the damage themselves. "We were about 3 weeks away from completing the main level when the flood hit," said Joe. "We had to drop everything and focus all our energy on salvage and repair. Now, the lower lever is back together and we're working on the main floor again." Debbie remembers, "We had brought all my hand spun yarns, and hand woven fabrics out for my studio as well as many Antiques. Unfortunately, we stored them in the lower level. Many of the people in town dove right in and helped. We never would have been able to save so much without the help of the wonderful people in Allegan."

Originally built as part of Baker Furniture Factories around 1906, the 3 level, 9,500-sq. ft. red brick building served as the crating and shipping warehouse until Hollis Baker moved his furniture factory to Holland, MI around 1933. Since then, a variety of manufacturers, including Furniture Masterpieces and Millcraft Products, have used the building. After Millcraft closed, the structure fell into disrepair and was finally condemned before being sold to a couple of 50-year-old dreamers from Dearborn in October of 2006.

"I got myself into this, it's entirely my fault" said Joe. When I married Debbie in 2002, sold my house, and moved into her's, I brought in my satellite TV.  She never had cable because she refused to pay to watch TV; she saw no value in it." All that changed when Debbie found the show "Re-Zoned" on the HGTV channel, a program centered on people creating homes from old commercial buildings. She was hooked. They spent the next two and half years searching for the right building to try their hand at a "little" project of their own. Debbie, being a weaver and spinner, would make the yearly trek to the Allegan Co. Fairgrounds for Fiber Fest, and it was on one of those trips they settled on Allegan. "After two years, several stitches, bumps, bruises, thousands of dollars, and many a night too sore to sleep, we finally are ready to open the doors officially," said Joe.

On Friday, December 19, in conjunction with Downtown Allegan's "Festive Fridays Shopping Night," we will be hosting an Art Show featuring Artists from Allegan, Detroit, and Grand Rapids. We have thirteen artists so far and more are signing on each day. We hope to see a great turn out in Allegan, nearly all the merchants are participating, there will be horse drawn carriage rides, hot chocolate and cider, and snacks, and perhaps even Santa may make an appearance. There is also an art show being held in many of the businesses downtown, with maps being handed out in front of City Hall. We are all dressed up bright and shiny; come spend a wonderful evening with Allegan and us. Visit their web site: www.myspace.com/sowspunsilk

Plein Air Artists of West Michigan
winter artVisitors from the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan, a recently formed group of artists who come together once a month to set up their easels outside,  braved the cold on Saturday, December 13, to be inspired by the beauty of Downtown Allegan.

Richard Jordan, founder of the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan and a Kalamazoo Gazette designer, had begun painting outdoors with fellow artists Mike Pendola, Kalthleen Crane, and Susan Badger.  They discussed forming a group of open-air artists from around the region.

The group has grown to include more than 30 artists who gather to paint at a different location on one Saturday each month.  Recently, Jordon and his wife Cheryl, made a short trip to Allegan to take a few photos of the beauty of our small town to send to the group. "There is a painting at nearly every corner and park," said Jordon

"Plein air" is a French expression that translates as ``in the open air'' and refers to the practice of painting outside from real-life scenes. The advent of ready-mixed paint sold in tubes and easily portable painting equipment in the mid-19th century meant that artists could go beyond the confines of the studio and capture the essence of natural settings. Plein air painting reached its peak of popularity around the turn of the last century. At that time, artists would often leave the bustle of urban environments to paint in more rural areas, forming artists' colonies.
