10 things to do this Summer in Downtown Allegan

Children are on summer break, the temperature is turning warmer, employees are looking for a break from work and gas prices are soaring, why not stay close to home and plan mini "trips" to Downtown Allegan this Summer.

 

With endless numbers of opportunities for citizens and tourists alike, Downtown Allegan is an ideal place to come with family and friends.  This historic downtown is heavy on the charm and generosity and offers a beautiful setting along the relaxing riverfront of the Kalamazoo River. 

 

As one looks forward to summer activities and entertainment, look no further than Downtown Allegan.  As a way to help get ready for the summer, a list of the 10 best things to do this summer has been compiled.  Below is the list in sequential order with what happens first. 

1.            Free Summer Matinees at The Regent - Catch a free show on the big screen at the Regent Theatre.  An art deco gem located in Downtown provides this free family entertainment Monday - Friday at 2:00 and 4:00 pm.  Each week a different children's movie will be featured ranging from Happy Feet to Night at the Museum.  For a complete listing of the movies, click here.  The Regent Theatre is located at 211 Trowbridge Street.

2.            Allegan Farmers Market - Homegrown freshness brought directly to you.  Every Thursday browse through a variety of fruits, vegetables, perennials, flowers, baked goods and more at the Farmers Market.  The market is open from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm and is located at the Water and Cutler Street parking lot.  The products change weekly, so mark your calendars.

3.            Old Jail Museum - Did you know in the Sheriff's wife used to cook meals for all of the inmates in the Allegan County Jail?  Be intrigued with other interesting facts and anecdotes at the historic Old Jail Museum in Downtown Allegan.  The museum is full of artifacts, photos and belongings of past Allegan residents.  This is a great place to visit and learn more about Allegan and the jail system.  Admission is free and the jail is located on Walnut Street directly across the street from the Allegan County Jail and Sheriff complex. 4.            It's a Mystery to All: Summer Reading Program - Allegan Public Library is hosting summer reading programs for students age 1 to grade 12.  In addition, "Summer Sleuthing for Adults" is being offered for adults interested in genealogy.  The programs start June 4 and run through the end of July.  For more information, please contact the Allegan Public Library at 269.673.4685 or www.alleganlibrary.orgClick for Reading Program Schedule.

5.           West Michigan Fly In - The sky will be filled with planes on June 23 as they make their way to the 7th Annual West Michigan Fly In at the Allegan Airport and Dodgen Aircraft.  The event starts at 7:00 am with a pancake breakfast and activities continue until 5:00 pm.  Events include an Exclusive Air Show, sky diving demonstrations, rides in a variety of airplanes and much more.  For more information, visit www.westmichiganflyin.com.

6.            July 3 Jubilee - Celebrate your independence with a bang along the Downtown Riverfront.  Partake in some activities and games from the good o' days, interact with famous American heroes, be in awe at the talents of our street performers and catch a tune at the Gazebo.  This year includes a parade that all are invited to participate in.  Dress up yourself like an American hero or colonial figure or decorate your bike or pet in red, white and blue.  The food and fun starts at 3:00 pm with the parade at 4:00 pm, and the event wraps up following the fireworks at dusk.  For more information on July 3 Jubilee, contact Trisha at 269.673.3456.

7.            Good Times at the Gazebo - For the past 19 summers, musicians of all genres have performed at the Mahan Gazebo as part of Downtown Allegan's concert series, Good Times at the Gazebo.  With some of the favorite performers returning again this year, The Williams Family, and some new talent, The Johnny Cash Tribute Show, the lineup this year is simply compelling.  If you enjoy bluegrass, country, folk or a little bit of everything, come to the Mahan Gazebo at 7:00 pm on Saturday nights July 4 - August 18 for some "good times."  For more information, please call 269.673.3456.

 8.            A Garden Walk - Enjoy the lovely gardens and landscaping at some of the area's finest homes as part of this summer's garden tour.  A Garden Walk is presented by Friends of Allegan Parks and is July 21 and 22 from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm rain or shine.  Proceeds used for beautification and improvement to Allegan Parks and advance tickets can be purchased at Something Sweet, 109 Locust Street.  On walk dates, tickets can be purchased at The Griswold Auditorium, 401 Hubbard Street.  For more information, please call 269.673.8393.

9.            Sidewalk Days - Shop for sales and bargains during sidewalk sales in Downtown Allegan July 26 and 27. The sidewalks will be lined with merchandise and other products for you to purchase.  Downtown Allegan offers a variety of different retail shops, restaurants and businesses.  Check out what Downtown Allegan has to offer you July 26 and 27. 

10.            Summer Camps - This summer, The Griswold Auditorium is hosting 2 great summer camp opportunities.  Join Instructor, Dana Levine of the Miller Auditorium, August 6 -10 for Break a Leg Theatre Camp.  This camp is open to students age 10 - 14.  Registration is $50 per student and must be received by July 25.  For more details on Theatre Camp call Trisha at 269.673.3456.

Calling all children and future artists!  Join, instructor, Lori Gavan, as students "travel the world" in search of art treasures.  Summer Art Camp is August 13- 17 from 9:00 - 11:30 am at The Griswold Auditorium.  The camp is open to children age 6-11, who have a passion for art.  Registration is limited to 20 students and is $30 per student, so register today.  Registration deadline is August 1, 2007.  For information contact 269.673.7080.

Water Street Construction Project Update
The Water Street Construction Project continues to be on schedule and still has an anticipated completion of the first week of July. 
 
This week concrete and top soil is being applied.  The final layer of paving on the roads will begin Monday June 25th. 
Kayak and Canoe Rentals offered on Riverfront
 Running Rivers Kayak Rentals is providing kayaks and canoes for the public to rent and use along the riverfront in Downtown Allegan. 
 
Currently, the hours of operation are from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Fridays and 1:00 pm - 7:00pm on Saturdays.  The kayaks and canoes are available for rent behind the Griswold Auditorium and Allegan Public Library on Hubbard Street. 
 
Whether you are a first time kayaker or avid kayaker all are invited to enjoy the beautiful riverfront and have fun in Downtown Allegan.  For more information visit, www.running-rivers.info.

A new look for Allegan Eye Care
 Allegan Eye Care recently completed a remodeling project at the store.  The purpose of the project was to increase patient flow allowing for the staff to serve patients in a more effective and efficient manner according to Optician Don Wood.   
 
The remodeling project encompassed the entire main level of the store located at 123 Locust Street.  The project created two new examination rooms complete with today's opthamalogy equipment and technology increasing the number of exam rooms offered to four.  In addition, the office is more open and inviting to patients creating a comfortable atmosphere at Allegan Eye Care.  The walls, doors and trim were also painted with a warm color scheme to improve the overall visual appearance to of the office.

July 3 Jubilee in Downtown Allegan

Celebrate America's Independence with a bang along the riverfront in Downtown Allegan on July 3rd.  July 3 Jubilee consists of activities and entertainment for all ages and is a great way to show your patriotism for America.

 

Festivities for July 3 Jubilee begin at 3:00 pm and conclude with a fireworks show at dusk.  The location of the activities and events is along Riverfront Plaza, Mahan Park and Brady Street in Downtown Allegan. 

 

Entertainment for the event includes musical performances, street performers, free matinees and more.   July 3 Jubilee also has activities and games for your enjoyment including paddleboat and kayak rentals, inflatable activities, games hosted by local non-profit organizations and more.  Visit with Ben Franklin and other American heroes around town and tour the historic Old Jail Museum to learn more about the history of Allegan. 

 

Mahan Gazebo will host the musical performances throughout the evening.  At 4:45 pm be amused by Aaron Vande Wege and his Dilly Songs performance.   Dilly Songs are designed to bring out the laughter of children.  Catch Casco Community Band at 5:45 pm as they play marches, popular tunes and other patriotic music.  The final musical performance is Immigrant Blue at 9:00 pm.  Immigrant Blue creates a unique sound blending rock with alternative music, a real crowd pleaser. 

 

"July 3 Jubilee is an opportunity for the local community and visitors to celebrate our freedom, honor those serving in the military and the veterans who have protected these rights, and have fun with families and friends," said Vicki Knuckles, Downtown Allegan Coordinator. 

 

This year, the first annual Jubilee Parade will take place at 4:00 pm.  Children, adults and pets are encouraged to dress up like American heroes or decorate their bikes and vehicles or just wave to the parade as it passes by.  If you are going to participate in the parade, you are asked to lineup at 3:30 pm at the Water and Cutler Street parking lot.  The parade route will include Trowbridge, Walnut, Hubbard and Locust Streets.

 

Several food vendors will also be present throughout the evening.  The vendors will be serving a variety of food ranging from pizza to elephant ears.  In addition, the Allegan Rotary Club will host a Chicken BBQ along with a frozen yogurt cart.

Public invited to Open House at Diane Sumner Photography
All are welcomed to visit the new studio of Diane Sumner Photography in Downtown Allegan on June 28.  The open house is from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at the new home of Diane Sumner Photography, 132 Hubbard Street.
 
The open house includes free drawings every 30 minutes for portrait sessions and framing, refreshments, live music and the opportunity to check out the new studio and Diane's work.
 
A graduate of Allegan High School and Kendall College of Art and Design, Diane Sumner is a professional photographer dedicated to capturing that "perfect" picture.  Her portfolio shows a knack for coaxing emotion and expression from her subjects.  Portraits of high school seniors, families, and children along with weddings are the focus of Sumner's photography. 
 
Deciding to move to Downtown Allegan was very exciting for Sumner.  At her new location, clients walk into a relaxed and personal atmosphere.  The unique architecture and design of downtown buildings and the riverfront serve as backdrops for her photographs.
