Unlocking Small Town Success:  The Dilemma and The Opportunity
The second article in a series of feature articles

Often the greatest dilemmas create the best opportunities.  In a small town, a person has a greater chance of truly making a difference.  The positive difference being made by individuals are seen each day with the care that businesses take in the character, detail and product presentation of their establishment.  Productive influences have been felt throughout the community with the many expansions of existing successful events and activities as well as moving forward with exciting new experiences for resident and visitors.  Waves of prosperity overlap - individual success impacts community success, and community success impact individual success.

The U.S. Census Bureau 1999-2000 indicates that non-metropolitan counties lag behind in population growth 6.6% from those with cities that exceed 50,000.  More that half of the 15,800 small towns in America lost population.  Most futurists predict this trend will continue well into the 21st century.  This trend affects not only this community; dozens of towns have suffered serious, disabling setbacks, only to rebound from those setbacks and essentially reinvent themselves - coming back stronger than before.

There is a charm to small-town living.  Even more, there is ingenuity in some small towns, an attitude and approach to problem solving, a vision and a work ethic that all work together to pump new life into a place that's barely a speck on the map - but is astoundingly vibrant and healthy within its borders.

Nobel Prize winner John Nash (1950) in his  Equilibrium theory  proposed changing win-lose situations to win-win  In the traditional win-lose situation, one entity - a person, a company, an organization or a country - vanquishes the opponent, winner take all.  Nash's theory allows for multiple winners; rivals can coexist and even mutually benefit from each other.

In the example of a business owner seeking to expand a profit margin, one solution is to undercut your competition, driving prices so low that competition is eliminated and the consumer wins.  But this is repeating the win-lose scenario; in this case, you ultimately lose as your profits go down.  The effect of such an approach is that the town pie, over time, becomes smaller.

The other approach is to expand the size of the pie.  Everyone wins when the pie becomes larger; everyone has a chance for a bigger piece.  Cooperation among "friendly rivals" within a town can result in greater benefits for all town residents.  When business, interest groups, and private citizens all work for the common good of the town, the town as a whole has a greater chance to prosper.  Big picture equals big pie.  Keeping the big picture in mind - the welfare of the entire town - steers you and your town toward that bigger pie.

The keys to success are not complex or mysterious.  Rather, they are grounded in common sense, "Can-Do" attitudes, and tried principles.

Viva! Brady Street

On Friday, August 17, from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m., four locally and nationally known bands, including Los Bandits, The Bronk Bros., The Common Good and Frankie Ballard, will take the stage at Allegan's downtown riverfront gazebo. This special event, titled Viva! Brady Street, was given its name due to the fact that Brady Street, which overlooks the gazebo and is typically calm on a Friday night, will be closed to automobile traffic and opened to an all-ages crowd to take part in this lively celebration of music, culture, diversity, and community. Admission is free.

Initiated by the Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce, the original intent of this event was to simply offer locals something lively to do in downtown Allegan on a Friday night. Now, due to the financial support from a core group of local businesses, organizations and residents, this live music event has evolved into a celebration of community and possibly the start of something much greater. The sponsors have a common interest and vision:  attracting a large number of area residents to share a unique and entertaining experience in their scenic and historic hometown.

Gerah Dutkiewicz, Allegan resident and self-titled "Coordinator of this Event by Default,"  works as a Marketing Consultant with The Allegan Group, is a mother of two small children, wife to a musician and, in general, just a person who is passionate about the arts and making Allegan a better place to live.

"I was asked by the Chamber to help out with planning and promoting this event and I figure, if we're going to do it at all, let's do it right," said Dutkiewicz. "It's been fantastic to present this event idea to Allegan residents, businesses and local organizations and see their eyes light up and then step up and offer their support. The town is a-buzz with Viva Brady!"

Kalamazoo-based band, Los Bandits, calls its music "Tex-Mex, Michigan style," a mixing of rhythm and blues with gospel and country rock influences and tejano performance style and instrumentation. The group has a big, rousing and danceable alternative world beat sound that appeals to a very diverse audience and gets listeners on their feet in no time.

The Common Good's perfect combination of timing, talent, and personality come together to yield a talented rock band with a social conscience that most certainly offers their audience an uncommonly good show.  The band's music can be described as a solid 90's underground rock sound that utilizes the best elements of punk, grunge, glam, new wave, and classic rock - only with a fresh, modern twist.

The Bronk Bros. and Headin' South's sound is a mixture of classic country, new country, classic rock, and modern rock to create an original sound which members describe as "a rockin' hillbilly extravaganza." It's an "out of control, pedal to the metal, in your face musical journey" that combines a wide range of musical influences and has made this group one of  Michigan's best known and well-received country acts.

The crowd at Viva! Brady Street will also get a chance to witness Frankie Ballard & Southern Smoke.  Frankie is a handsome, young, and hungry musician fighting his way to the top. He grew up around country and rock music as a kid, getting his start impersonating Elvis and Johnny Cash with his father. Now, he performs what is described as "hard hitting Southern music with Delta roots" nearly four nights a week.

The Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce is currently seeking individuals, businesses and organizations to join a growing list willing to help sponsor this event. For general information and more details on getting involved, please contact:

More than Jail history, Allegan history
Did you know that artifacts and other belongings brought from the East in a covered wagon in 1835 are now housed in the Allegan County Historical Museum?  See this and much more at the Allegan County Historical Museum located at 113 Walnut Street.

The museum also features period rooms containing furnishings from Allegan County.  The foremost contributor was Miss Elizabeth Wetmore who gave the greater portion of the large furniture in the Pioneer Room, the Victorian Parlor and the Victorian Bedroom.  The museum also has dining room  and a law office imitiating such rooms in 1910.  Another part of the museum is the Harold Fox Room exhibiting military and patriotic objects.

The museum is literally filled from floor to ceiling with Allegan County history.  Be amazed by the stories and even some of the people who once lived in town or traveled through town.

The Allegan Historical Museum or Old Jail Museum is open on Friday and Saturdays from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.  To request a private tour or showing, please call 269.673.8292.
